Screenshot 2025-01-25 at 6.40.58 PM.png

Our online Intro to Statistics course for high school homeschoolers is offered as a full-year asynchronous

class or in a self-paced format. Students will still explore major themes of statistics such as data collection, experimental design, probability, and testing statistical claims through inference procedures. The class will move at a slower pace than AP Statistics teaching students to hone writing skills through statistical interpretations and life applications. Statistics is relevant to every field!

  • Asynchronous Intro to Statistics Classes: Students will learn through a combination or teacher produced instructional lessons, fun real-world application activities, engaging Crash Course videos and peer discussions. Students should come ready to discuss how statistics is applied to their future careers and everyday life around them.

  • Self-Paced Intro to  Statistics: Students cover the same material as the asynchronous class through weekly teacher produced instructional lessons and activities. Students will receive the same detailed feedback on all assignments from the instructor. There will be no peer discussions in this class as students will progress through the self-paced class at a pace that fits their schedule.

  • Optional Live Study Hall:  The instructor will offer a weekly study hall that can be utilized in two ways:

    • Drop in. Students can drop in to a Zoom study hall at any time for a quick question.

    • Homework time. They can log in to a Zoom study hall--with microphones muted and videos on or off--to work on their math homework and then unmute to get immediate help when questions arise.

Foundational Elements

All classes include teacher-recorded videos to show important skills like collecting data, creating graphical displays, analyzing data and using probabilities to make statistical claims.

In their online classroom, Intro to Statistics students will see some of the following:

  • Short instructional videos demonstrating the use of statistics in the real world

  • Supplemental instructional videos to help formalize ideas   are being discovered through the activities

  • Activities from StatsMedic showing real-world applications

  • Homework problems that build on concepts students learn in assigned activities

  • Chapter tests to assess student’s mastery of topics

Core and Supplemental Resources

  • This class will use 5th edition of Statistics and Probability with Applications by Daren Starnes, Josh Tabor, and Luke Wilcox (2025). This textbook will explain statistical concepts in a clear manner and use a scaffolding approach to help students master concepts.

Ashley Porter has a particular passion for statistics and wanted an introduction class that all students could take to focus on the basics of Statistics. She hopes students will join her in this highly useful class and believes students will find it relevant and interesting no matter where their interests lie in high school, college, and beyond!
